Piglet Cuteness!

The same day that we moved into our temporary rental at Dorothy's Grange in Blanchardville, Wisconsin, two pregnant Sows gave birth to their spring litters.

The two mamas, Roxie and Dottie, are the Black and White of life at The Grange :-) They are both rare breeds, chosen for their docile natures, grazing and mothering abilities.

Roxie is a heritage Large Black pig - a breed that is in danger of disappearing. Sweet, laid-back Dottie is Roxie's white counterpart - a Gloucestershire Old Spot (GOS), another rare breed.

Sows give birth to litters of pigs twice a year. Each litter usually has eight to 12 baby pigs. Giving birth to baby pigs is called farrowing. All eleven of Dottie's litter survived, but Roxie's litter was not as lucky and only a handful of little ones survived past the first few weeks.

Baby pigs appear very greedy when they are competing for food from their mothers. The poor mamas get no rest from constantly hungry piglets running after their teets! Perhaps this is why the words “pig” and “hog” have come to be associated with greedy behavior :-)
