A Hygge-Inspired Winter
Winter is the most difficult of the seasons for me...the cold and dark, along with seasonal affective disorder that exacerbates my depression, make it a challenging time. Having a game plan to get through the winter months is always helpful!
Right now my desk is piled high with books to research and help me apply the Danish lifestyle concept of HYGGE (pronounced HEW-guh) through the upcoming winter months.
Some words that come closest to an English translation for hygge, are: comfortable, cozy, snug, toasty, warm, homey, welcoming, relaxing, simple, slow, togetherness.
The first book I'm delving into is "American Cozy: Hygge-inspired ways to create comfort & happiness" by Stephanie Pedersen, a lifestyle expert and author with Danish and American roots. She further describes hygge as:
* Experiencing quiet joy in any given moment. * Taking pleasure from the things around you. * Creating beauty in your daily interactions, objects and activities. * The magic of turning any situation into a moment of coziness.
Here's to discovering more ways to imbue winter with dashes of hygge - meeting it with less resistance and more feelings of comfort, warmth and relaxation!
