Branch Art

One of my favorite subjects to photograph at this time of year and throughout the winter months, are the bare branches of trees. Unadorned by the flowery or leafy ornaments of spring, summer or fall, they take on a haunting, poignant quality all their own. And to me it's when they seem most beautiful.

They remind me of us, when we're going through the "winter seasons" of our lives. When all the pretty adornments of life that usually consume so much of our time and energy, are shed to the ground and we are laid bare. With our fragility and vulnerability exposed, we have to dig deep to persevere until the seasons change and the light and color return to our life story. It's this human capacity for resilience that I find poignantly beautiful, just like the bare branches of the trees.

Here are some favorites from my 'Branch Art Collection'.

ZEN SHADOWS

“We often walk without knowing the beautiful and the

mysterious art created behind us by our shadows.” ― Mehmet Murat ildan

A SECRET MEETING

"My eyes always keep searching, something inexpressible, above the far sky. I long to get lost, inside the evening-twilight. Silence always tickles me in a strange way; I meet 'me' in the time between sunset and darkness." ― Sabr Muz Leemah

MOONLIGHT BLESSINGS

"Like the dignity of moonlight restoring the earth, May your thoughts incline with reverence and respect..." ― John O'Donohue

MUSE

"Nature is inside art as its content, not outside as its model." ~ Marilyn French

WAFTS OF PINK

"I'd like to just get one of those pink clouds and put you in it and push you around." ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald

TREE TOPS

"Be like a branch of a tree; flex your body to face 'wind of sorrow'; flex a little harder to dance in the 'wind of happiness'." ― Santosh Kalwar
