An Ode to my Woodpiles
“To poke a wood fire is more solid enjoyment than almost anything else in the world.”
~ Charles Dudley Warner
I love the woodpiles outside my front and back door! There are few things as therapeutic to me as tending to the fire in a fireplace or wood stove. It gets me out of my head, and especially when the voices of Depression are unrelenting up in there, that is no small feat!
That old, seasoned wood generates heat and light to combat the cold and the dark. It comes alive again in the form of flames that dart back and forth, calling for my attention: "get out of your head ; come dance with us". What great comfort my woodpiles bring to me.
"Fire is the sun unwindin' itself out o' the wood."
~ David Mitchell
The Woodpile
"Age appears to be best in four things -
Old wood best to burn,
Old wine to drink,
Old friends to trust,
And old authors to read.”
~ Alonso of Aragon
